A journey east to Taiwan

Chapter II: Taichung, Checheng, and Shueili
August 2016

After our time in Tainan, we took the bullet train to rainy Taichung 台中, Taiwan’s second most populous city located on the western side of the island.

We stopped first at the Rainbow Village 彩虹眷村, a former veterans’ housing development that was converted to public art by former soldier Huang Yung-Fu.

We stayed in a snazzy hotel in downtown Taichung and met up with Jeffrey’s mom, who treated us to a great dinner at Chun Shui Tang 春水堂 (the inventor of bubble tea!).

The next day, we went on another train adventure. This time, we were heading to Shueili Township.

On the way, we made a couple stops, including one at Checheng – a historic logging village with a bright green lake.

We finally arrived to the beautiful village town of Shueili, Jeffrey’s mom’s family’s hometown. We visited Jeffrey’s grandmother and her large house, and ate cold treats (courtesy of Jeffrey’s mom) to stave off the sweltering heat.
